-¿Crees que siempre se puede decir algo nuevo respecto de tu trabajo artístico, teniendo en cuenta lo que has realizado en el pasado, ya sea lejano o inmediato?

-Es paradojal hacer un panorama retrospectivo de una obra que jamás ha querido ser prospectiva. (Recordemos que “prospectivo” significa que hace referencia a un tiempo futuro). Esto sería un poco cometer el error de Orfeo, que se da vuelta para mirar a Eurídice antes del tiempo acordado y sin querer la envía para siempre a los infiernos. No miraré hacia atrás para que mi obra continúe viva (risas).

No puedo relacionar lo hecho en el pasado con lo que haré desde hoy en adelante.

Cada momento podrá parecerse al anterior pero no es igual.

Estoy en una permanente fascinación por haber descubierto melodías maravillosas que duermen en filmes que ya pocos ven, a las que puedo ponerle textos dando rienda suelta a mi imaginación y a los sueños sumergidos largo tiempo en mi alma.

Soy un viajero que cae sobre manuscritos olvidados y aun cuando lo que escribo son historias a mitad imaginarias, ellas renacen gracias a melodías que parecen haber estado esperando esos textos.

-¿Cuánta gente aprecia semejante trabajo?

-No lo sabemos. Lo más excitante es interpretar estas canciones y comprobar a quienes sorprenden o emocionan. Siempre es un misterio.

El resultado es bastante “inquietante”.

-¿La palabra inquietante es adecuada para definir lo que busca tu manera de interpretar?

-la obra artística tiene obligación de ser “ inquietante” de diferentes maneras. Tiene que sorprender, emocionar y hasta molestar.

-¿Alguna vez alguien se ha sentido molesto con tu obra actual?

-Por supuesto. Algunos hispanohablantes saben que soy uno de ellos y me critican por cantar en Inglés.

Los amantes de la música clásica no saben de qué manera clasificar mi obra, por eso a los últimos álbumes les hemos titulado Casualmente Clásico, porque nunca tuve intención de meterme en el terreno lírico. No tengo voz para eso. Soy un “ Crooner”, como me llaman en los Estados Unidos. Los amantes del bolero dicen que soy un “casi bolerista” pero no cumplo con los modelos del género. Así podría seguir mencionando reacciones del público.

De todas maneras muchos escuchan mis grabaciones con diferentes intenciones u objetivos. El resultado es el crecimiento exponencial de mi audiencia.

-¿Tienes una especie de “contraseña” para entrar a éste raro mundo tuyo?

-¡Contraseña!… La expresión parece designar una manera casi iniciática para entrar al fondo de las cosas.

No hay contraseñas sino palabras, poemas, vivencias generadores de ideas y emociones.

Me gusta mucho cantar mi actual repertorio y he declarado la libertad de hacer lo que amo sin preocuparme por la crítica.

Es maravilloso lo que ocurre: el público se acerca, las personas comparten las canciones disponibles en las tiendas, en Youtube o Radios Internacionales como Radio Airplay, Pandora y otras. Se invitan a descubrir mi repertorio. Eso es muy halagador.

¿Tribeca New York Music te exige metas económicas?

-Igual que los soldados de un ejército que salen a luchar y no saben cuánto cuestan las operaciones, yo hago mi trabajo sin tener idea de cuánto le cuesta a la Empresa.

Por suerte hasta hoy no es mi problema.

-¿Sábes por qué nadie te presiona ?

-Creo tener la respuesta, pero por prudencia no debo decir nada al respecto. Sé que la Empresa está conforme con mi trabajo.

¿Cómo lo sabes y por qué estás tan seguro?

-Porque mirando la agenda que me han preparado para el año 2023, no hay dudas que van sumando inversiones para que yo siga grabando. Nadie comete locuras en esta actividad.

Jhosemaria De Niro reflects on his career and recording projects for 2023

-Do you think you can always say something new about your artistic work, taking into account what you have done in the past, whether distant or immediate?

-It is paradoxical to make a retrospective panorama of a work that has never wanted to be prospective. (Let's remember that "prospective" means that it refers to a future time).This would be a bit like making the mistake of Orpheus, who turns to look at Eurydice before the agreed time and unwittingly sends her forever to hell. I will not look back so that my work continues to live on (laughs).

I cannot relate what I have done in the past with what I will do from today onwards.

Each moment may resemble the previous one but it is not the same.

I am in a permanent fascination for having discovered marvellous melodies that sleep in films that few people watch anymore, to which I can put texts, giving free rein to my imagination and to the dreams that have long been submerged in my soul.

I am a traveller who falls upon forgotten manuscripts and even when what I write are imaginary stories, they are reborn thanks to melodies that seem to have been waiting for those texts.

-How many people appreciate such work?

-We shall never know. The most exciting thing is to perform these songs and see who is surprised or touched by them. It's always a mystery.

The result is quite "disturbing".

-Is the word disturbing the right word to define what your way of interpreting is looking for?

- The artistic work has to be "disturbing" in different ways. It has to surprise, thrill and even disturb.

-Has anyone ever felt annoyed with your current work?

-Of course. Some Spanish speakers, who know that I am a Spanish speaker as well, criticize me for singing in English.

Classical music lovers don't know how to classify my work, that's why the last few albums have been called Casually Classic, because I have never intended to get into the lyrical realm. I don't have the voice for that. I'm a "crooner" as they call me in the USA. Bolero lovers say that I am an "almost Bolerista" but I don't fit the models of the genre. I could go on and on mentioning reactions from the public.

However, many listen to my recordings with different intentions or objectives. The result is the exponential growth of my audience.

-Do you have some kind of "password" to enter this weird world of yours?

-Password!...The expression seems to designate an almost initiatory way to enter into the depths of things.

There are no passwords but there are words, poems, experiences that generate ideas and emotions.

I love to sing my current repertoire and I have declared the freedom to do what I love without worrying about criticism.

It's wonderful what happens: the public approaches me, people share the songs available in the shops, on Youtube or International Radios like Radio Airplay, Pandora and others. They are invited by others to discover my repertoire. That's very flattering.

-Does Tribeca New York Music set financial goals for you?

-Like soldiers in an army who go out to fight and never know how much the operations cost, I do my job without having any idea how much it costs to the company.

Fortunately, to this day it is not my problem.

-Do you know why nobody presses you?

-I think I have the answer, but for prudence's sake, I must not say anything about it. I know that the company is happy with my work.

-How do you know and why are you so sure?

-Because, looking at the schedule they have prepared for me for the year 2023, there is no doubt that they are adding investments for me to continue recording. Nobody does anything crazy in this activity.
