Winnik: Y fui yo quien dijo: “¡Hey, aquí sucede algo!”. Nosotros no hemos inventado nada.

Winnik: ¡No! Él no aceptaría semejante responsabilidad.

El próximo álbum de Jhosemaría y de Tribeca New York Music se titulará “Jhosemaría with the soul in his hands”.

Neni Gibelli of Nova Agency spoke at length with two executives of Tribeca New York Music: Diane Haightell (Director of Production) and Robert Winnik (Director of Commercial Relations).

Thank you very much for this conversation. It is rare to talk to those who are "behind" the cameras, the microphones, the production and the artistic direction. Tribeca New York Music has become known, above all, for the recordings of Jhosemaría De Niro. Is that so?

Haightell : This is only partly true. Our company was a simple association of people who organized and contacted musicians to make productions for projects that were then presented to those who were looking for certain products.

We were a kind of "casting" company and we went out to look for clients.

The appearance of Jhosemaría, first in some venues in the USA ( New York, Las Vegas, Atlanta.... etc ) but fundamentally from his debut and successive very successful presentations at the CARNEGIE HALL ( OCTOBER 2015/16 and 18) put us in front of a strange artist, with a beautiful colour of voice, against the current, who did not care what people thought of his repertoire, at times "covers" and at times "very, very difficult to digest" (laughs) and spontaneously loved by a "previously apathetic" audience, ranging in age from young people to the young and old, to the young and old. , ranging in age from young people in their 20s to seniors with no age limit.

Winnik: And it was me who said: Hey, there's something going on here! We haven't invented "anything".

After listening to him sing, we were even more impressed by his views on the music business, especially when he says that he has no commercial talent, but that he has a sociological and intuitive view of how an artist should approach" such a difficult activity".

Could you clarify what is the opinion of Jhosemaría that struck you ?

Hightell: The first question was why hasn't this singer had a great supporting company since the beginning of his career?

Winnik: Jhosemaria, made us aware of the erratic nature of his activity, in many informal meetings, as well as considering himself a nomad for several years.

Hightell: It is curious that, despite his strong imprint of Buenos Aires and being a great connoisseur of the country where he was born, Jhosemaria manifests his enormous multicultural nature. He does not feel Argentinian, nor French, nor Italian, and he combines all three characteristics at the same time. He is very French (in fact, English speakers perceive a strong accent in the way he pronounces English), he is very Italian and very Porteño (from Buenos Aires), almost "Gardelian" to the extreme.

What things had he tried in the past?

D. Hightell: Everything he loved. He brought into the French language his own songs from his early youth, many from the Brazilian repertoire and Argentinian songs by great poets.

His first port of call was Spain, where he was unknown and there was no "Feeling" with the Spanish public, except for a very special minority. Nevertheless, he was treated with love and respect. He earned a place but his repertoire was "too complex" and out of commercial context.

After his first steps in Spain he went to live in Paris, where he still has his main home and where he won great acclaim singing live. He recorded little but of very good quality.

Jhosemaria realized that the world that formed his "cosmogony" had changed and that his style would be reduced to sentimental minorities and lovers of "other music", even classical music.

We Anglo-Saxons have contributed to general public fatigue. We have had greats in Jazz, Country, Pop... but we imposed the new shows, mainly visual . Then came the internet, social networks, the desire of the masses to be protagonists and all these phenomena together. We are also of the opinion that the great masses of the public do not listen. They jump, scream and want to be on stage. Bands, in general, are an excuse, a trigger for excesses and the desire of many people to leave anonymity behind.

Tribeca New York Music decided to support Jhosemaría who also influenced the changes that the company has undergone. He also found people who thought like him but did not dare to say so.

DoesTribeca New York Music depend financially only on one singer?

Winnik: No hahaha! He would not accept such a responsibility.

We have implemented a "cooperative" system with occasional private contributions for the productions. Moreover, he is already part of the company, he has a voice as a manager, although the decisions are always consensual.

Our intention was not to talk about Jhosemaria, but it is impossible to remain indifferent to a phenomenon which, however, many are reluctant to talk about, such as his current influence on new generations of young people with good voices who find themselves eclipsed by "saleable products" and which are not precisely of quality.

Winnik: Opera is still the refuge of the art of Bel Canto.

We want to rescue "the quality of good singing" in the old style of the great crooners, such as Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Dean Martin, AL Martino, etc. That's why we call Jhosemaria "The Last Crooner". There are great and personal voices, but he is the one we have discovered in recent years.

When he was asked to sing in English, he started with well-known songs and continued with his own songs in our language. But the big revolution came when he wrote texts for film music that had no lyrics. Then he had the need to sing great poets, both English and American, adding them to great classical compositions. The emblematic one that serves as an example is Shakespeare's Madrigal with music by Gustav Mahler.

Now, we have discovered beautiful lyrics to songs of his that are little or not well known. We have translated them, adapted them and moved whoever is able to sit down and enjoy the wonderful texts, such as "Your hands'', " Through the streets of the past ", "Search for that child" and others that we are slowly recording with new melodies. They are NEW SONGS. The next album of Jhosemaría (and TRIBECA NEW YORK MUSIC) will be titled Jhosemaría with the soul in his hands. It will be soulful. We have found our own "style", we don't like to say "product" but this singer is easily identifiable among thousands. Sometimes you look for that all your life without getting it.

Why don't you film videos like the other singers ?

Hightell: If we talk about Jhosemaría it is because he refuses to film videos (he is the only singer we have, although we are developing others) . And he is right. It can't be that a song is only published when the corresponding video is available. We have to seduce again by listening, listening, listening... Jhosemaría tells a very interesting anecdote: a young man came to his house to carry out a task. When he found out who his client was, he wanted to hear something. Jhosemaría gladly agreed and started a song and the young man, as if he were an extraterrestrial, remained paralyzed, disoriented, asking: "Where is the video?

Opera is a visual spectacle, of course, but we can also listen to those beautiful voices without having to accompany it with images.

Sometimes we make simple and straightforward audiovisuals, to advance information on YouTube of songs that are going to take some time to be published.

Is music just an image for record companies?

Hightell: Probably. It ensures the dependency of independent singers and artists.

It costs a lot of money to make a good video. It's almost like a short film. Who can make it?

It's not democratic at all. Artists get desperate because most of them can't make mini films, which is what videos really are. So the terrible pilgrimage begins, looking for a company that allows visibility.

Look at the reports we always publish on Facebook, about Jhosemaría's audience, not on YouTube (although we have received good news) but on radio stations like Jango, Radio Airplay, Pandora and others.

It's David against Goliath. That's why we love and respect him.

He has detractors, which means that many envy him.

Said our own Woody Allen: I shall never know the key to success, but I know the key to failure. Trying to please everyone.

There is a Breton prayer that Jhosemaría De Niro often repeats to us:

Thy sea, O God, so great,

My boat so small,

It cannot be that any happy fate,

Will me befall,

Save as Thy goodness opens paths for me,

Through the consuming vastness of the sea.

Thy winds, O God, so strong,

So slight my sail.

How could I cub and bit them on the long and salty trail,

Unless Thy love were mightier

than the wrath Of all the tempests that beset my path?

Thy world, O God, so fierce,

And I so frail.

Yet, though its arrows threaten oft to pierce

My fragile Mail,

Cities of refuge rise where dangers cease,

Sweet silences abound, and all is peace.
