“Estamos realizando gestiones. No quiero adelantarme.

English version

Jhosemaria de Niro: "Love has been trivialized and even devalued by a culture of superficiality"

The composer and singer Jhosemaria de Niro once again opened up a dialogue with NOVA, and spoke with Nöel “Neni” Gibelli, director of NOVA Córdoba, about the present of his career. With his characteristic sharp vision, Jhosemaria tells us about his projects and gives us an overview of current music and art.

NOVA: How could you define this precise moment in your professional life?

“I would define it as contradictory. Why? Because it is the moment when I have less presence on international stages and more popularity I have gained in the world through my recorded production.

NOVA: What does this contradiction mean to you?

“As my grandmother would say, that ‘luck is crazy and whoever gets lucky gets lucky’, -laughs.

I think there is a huge mass of people in search of sensations related to the purest of the human soul. In recent years, the world has hardened, love has been trivialised and even "devalued" by a culture of superficiality.

Poetry has fallen into a depression into which few descend.

As the Spanish journalist Jesus Quintero used to say, being ignorant used to be a problem and even a shame. Many people were illiterate.

In the present, where many people are no longer so, there are those who boast that they have never read a book in their lives. Today's world and the mainstream media are increasingly tailored to these stark masses.

And suddenly there are artists who are not interested in fashions or the advice of "young entrepreneurs" and who devote their lives to their work.

They dedicate their efforts to an aesthetics that surpasses, (although not for that reason it must not please everyone, but undoubtedly inspired by the best values of music and poetry). Suddenly it happens that stunned or tired people appear massively independent of those who try to sell them a world in coloured packages with the following maxim printed on them: ‘This is what’s new from…’

Humbly I am one of those artists who are only interested in expressing what they carry in their hearts, regardless of economic success. And that is the origin and destiny of artistic work. I am not saying that there is NO MONEY to be made. There are big, quality, highly selling productions, but it's not the norm.

It seems to me that there is a lot of ugly stuff that has accustomed the ear and even the eye of the masses to what lacks quality. I say this because it also happens in the plastic arts.

It's true that tastes are tastes... but Puccini would not be debatable and there are people who can't stand lyric poetry or discuss great singers. The world is a very controversial place. But I cling to certain aesthetic models that I grew up with”.

NOVA: What would change if you were to return to theatres?

“I wouldn't change anything, but what counts is my tiredness. Don't forget, as I once told you, my professional life, for many years, was only spent singing live in the most diverse and unusual places in different countries of the world, especially in Europe. I have lived in Spain, in France, in Greece (Mykonos), in the USA and now in Italy where I share my days between Rome, Paris and the Canary Islands.

I dislike getting on a plane, not only because the controls have become unbearable, but also because organizing concerts in theatres gives me useless stress. I'm doing my best in the studio. My sessions sometimes turn into mini-concerts because curious people come and I let them do it.

Besides, at this moment in my life, my libido is set on songs that move me and for whose interpretation I have to resort to my emotional memory.

My current repertoire is apparently for few people. Or it is for those who need to feel something different, to vibrate, to be moved... I don't know. It is not to ‘cheer up’ in the vulgar sense of the word.

My style has unleashed some very funny opinions, as there are those who advise it as ‘therapy’. It's amazing how many different opinions are produced around my work”.

NOVA: You were in Argentina after four years since your last visit. What has this return awakened in you?

A lot of nostalgia, some sadness for seeing a country different from the one I keep in my cosmogony and joy for meeting again some people who were important in my life, such as the singer Liliana Cassini, the poet Any Carmona and the writer Gilda Bona.

I was also able to meet others with whom I only had virtual contact, such as Lety Hansen, Aldo Gómez Di Giuseppe, Adriana Facio and Fede Chedrese. All of them very valuable beings who reconcile one with life and the country.

With them we are thinking of something crazy: a great event that brings together visual artists, writers, musicians and singers to make a great Session of diverse manifestations through which all those who are rigorous and talented can show their work.

NOVA: Where would these dream events take place?

“We are making arrangements; I don't want to get ahead of myself.

On 10 December 2022 I have to travel to New York and then on to Europe. I hope to leave something fairly organized and monitor from afar and help the friends who are left with the work.

For Liliana Cassini and for me, especially, it is a kind of ‘reliving’ something that united us in our adolescence and that brings us together again with the same pure illusion of those golden years.

Thank you Neni Gibelli because you have become almost the official press agent of Tribeca New York Music”.
